During the committee hearing for Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) grilled the judge on his campaign-finance positions. Specifically, Whitehouse challenged the judge to account for the dark-money groups supporting his nomination. He cited a group whose $10 million “campaign” investment is “the most robust operation in the history of confirmation battles.” He continued, “That sounds pretty political to me.”
Whitehouse then asked Gorsuch why someone would spend $10 million to make him a Supreme Court justice.
“You’d have to ask them,” Gorsuch replied. Immediately, Whitehouse jabbed back: “I can’t. Because I don’t know who they are.”
